The morning started with a text from Amy at college, “Didn’t sleep all night. Threw up this morning.” That’s a pretty helpless feeling for a parent – not much fun for her either!
As the day unfolded I heard more details about Amy’s long night. In an effort not to disturb her roommate, Amy had moved out into the lounge to read until she could sleep. Unfortunately, it was intense nausea, and not sleep, that came. Despite her best efforts, the trash can and Amy’s stomach contents didn’t arrive at the same location at the same time. However, being nauseous and groggy at 4 a.m., she was too exhausted to worry about it just then. After moving back into her room, round two hit, but this time she made it into the bathroom. In the process, she accidentally woke her roommate. It’s at times like this when one’s true colors show.
Instead of being upset, the 18 year-old roommate (who had known Amy for only about 1 month) came to the bathroom door and asked if she could do anything to help. Then, without being asked, this roommate picked up her supply of Clorox wipes and headed out into the lounge and proceeded to clean up the previous mess. Limitless love – it still amazes me when I think about it.
Later in the day, Amy broke down and visited the campus nurse. On her way back home, she ran into a different floor mate who noticed she looked pretty pale. Again, without being asked, this college freshman insisted on bringing Amy some chicken noodle soup and hot tea.
While I hated the fact that my child was sick, I loved learning that she was surrounded by people who knew how to love…may we all do likewise. –Dave
