I recently visited my parents to help Dad celebrate his 78th birthday. At one point, someone asked Dad what he wanted to do on his special day. His answer made me chuckle – “At my age, it’s no longer about what I WANT to do; it’s about what I’m ABLE to do!” 🙂
He said it with a smile in his voice, yet I know there was bittersweet truth in his words, too. While he remains in pretty good health overall, I know he’s frustrated by some of the physical limitations that have come with the normal aging process.
The truth is, Old Age has me in his sites, too. Funny, I always thought I’d somehow escape his notice. But, I haven’t – and I’m becoming more and more aware that the best time I have for carrying out the good I can is…today. For tomorrow, I may not be able to do what I want.
Personally, I choose to use the fact that I’m aging as a motivator to active service now, not as a discouraging defeat. Is there anything that God has asked you to do for His Kingdom? Today may be the best day to get after it! –Dave
