“Lord, to whom shall we go?” (John 6:68)
When the multitudes had deserted Him, Jesus asked His disciples if they wanted to do the same. Peter’s reply truly resonates with me. In his words, I hear both surrender and security.
On the one hand, there is a tone of resignation in Peter’s words – “Lord, we’ve explored all the other options this world has to offer, and well…you’re the only One with any real answers to life’s big questions. Who else has the words of eternal life? So, where else could we possibly go – You’re all we’ve got!”
On the other hand, there is a security in knowing that they could, indeed, go to Him for life, and life everlasting. They were always welcome to go to Him – as a first resort and not as the last.
Sometimes, when I’m facing what appears to be a Goliath in my life, I need to remember Peter’s question – “Lord, to whom shall I go? To whom do I NEED to go?” More often than not, Christ should be where I turn first for help – not last.
