It was 6:17pm on Christmas night when we passed by it on the way to Grandma’s house. Every other business we had passed that day was closed, but this one was open and the parking lot was packed.
My surprise was immediately replaced with a sense of sorrow. For there, out in the middle of a Kansas pasture was a casino filled with patrons. Please hear me, I am not passing judgment on those inside – I knew none of them. I was just sad that on this holiest of nights, when most people were gathered with family and friends, there were those who felt a greater need, or perhaps a greater welcome, within a gambling establishment. Perhaps those inside had no place else to go; perhaps some were addicted to the slots or various tables within. I just don’t know. But, what I do know is that there was likely a great need for Christ’s love to be shared within those walls.
I’d like to tell you that I made an executive decision to alter our plans, pulled into the parking lot, and took the gospel into that casino on Christmas night. But, like I often do, I let the urgent trump the important. My larger family and dinner were awaiting our arrival after all, so I pressed on. However, I am convicted that I need to be more ready and willing to be His voice. I can’t wait for them to come to me at a convenient time; I must be willing to go to them during their time of need.
A new year is coming, and some of us will be making resolutions as it begins. Can you think of a better way to spend this coming year than being part of the Great Commission? The fields are full – will you help with the harvest? –Dave
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field” (Luke 10:2).
