To tell you the truth, this is somewhat difficult for me. I’m not used to coming before a group, admitting a need, and asking for prayer. But, tomorrow afternoon, Angie and I will be taking a team of approximately 20 volunteers (including many wonderful teenagers) to help staff a week at Camp CUMCITO – a wonderful Christian camp dedicated to reaching inner city children with the gospel and love of Jesus.
For the next 7 days, we will empty ourselves in an effort to effectively share our lives with those who have needs we can hardly imagine. We will cook for them, play with them, sing with them, and teach them. We will hug them, race them, dunk them in the lake, and swim with them in the pool. We will make s’mores around campfires, and camp under the stars. We will listen to them share stories of their heartbreaks and of their dreams. And, we will get to tell them the story of a loving God in heaven who sent His Son to make a way for them.
It is a wonderful privilege to spend this week with them; truly it is. However, I’ll be honest with you – it’s incredibly draining. Those who serve during these weeks often find themselves at the end of their rope physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. So, we covet your prayerful support. Please pray for:
- The staff. For our unity, and stamina. That we would be the hands and feet of Christ. That we would rely on God’s Spirit and not our own strength.
- The campers. That they would experience the love of Christ through our actions. That they would see our compassion and want to know its Source. That their hearts would be open to the gospel, and that many would come to a saving faith. That when they return home, they would receive support and encouragement.
Please serve alongside us this week through your active, ongoing prayers – for they are powerful and effective (James 5:16). –Dave
