His Word never runs dry or ceases to amaze me. The answers I find here to very real-life issues are phenomenal. Such was the case when I came to Romans 15. In the minutes leading up to reading the words below, I was in the middle of a very real, very painful reality in life. The actions and words of others had found their mark, and I was struggling for the way to respond.
As I opened my Bible, I asked God to give me anything I could apply…here was what I read, “The insults of those who insult You have fallen on Me. For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures. Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement allow you to live in harmony with one another, according to the command of Christ Jesus…” (Romans 15:3-5)
Moments earlier, I had felt the sting of insults; however, Paul encourages us to let the insults of others fall on Christ. Having turned those over to Christ, we’re to do two specific things – endure the reality, and open the Scriptures. If we will, Paul says we’ll find encouragement and hope. With encouragement, endurance, and hope in hand, we can then live in harmony with one another – including those who insult us.
Turning insults into harmony – it’s possible if we follow God’s instructions. –Dave
