“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; Oh what a foretaste of glory divine.”
We had gotten the phone call in the middle of the night. My mother-in-law was in the hospital, which had been a fairly common occurrence as she had battled Multiple Sclerosis (MS) most of her adult life. This seemed to be a ‘routine’ visit, so, we were surprised when the hospital staff called and instructed us to gather.
In an effort to remain awake on the drive, and to break the somewhat anxious silence that hung in the air, we turned on our local Christian radio station. Almost on cue, the song “Blessed Assurance” came over the airwaves. Instantly, my wife and I knew this was going to be the hospital stay that ushered her mom into glory.
We made it to the hospital in time to say our goodbyes, and then Judy went home, where she danced on legs that were now healthy for the first time in decades. How did we know with certainty that she was in heaven with her Lord? Because she had professed her faith in Christ as a child, and we take God at His Word which tells us:
“Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” (2 Cor 1:21-22)
When God guarantees something, you can take it to the bank! –Dave
