It’s one of the most beautiful pictures of God in the entire Bible (in my humble opinion):
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)
Yet perhaps you’ve wondered it too… Does God really see all my sorrows and wounds? Can He possibly? I mean, I’m one of approximately 7 billion people on Earth – how can He juggle the concerns in my little world?
Part of me believes God knew finite men would doubt His infinite abilities, so He orchestrated it in such a way that the very next sentence makes an even bigger claim about His abilities:
He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name (v.4).
According to one estimate, there are about 10 billion galaxies in the observable universe. And while the number of stars in each galaxy varies, assuming an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy means that there are about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (that’s 1 billion trillion) stars in the observable universe! And our God spoke each one into existence and calls each one by name!!!
Friends, our God is limitless. He has no memory issues. He has no capacity limitations. If He is acquainted with 1 billion trillion stars, juggling a measly 7 billion people is nothing to Him! Perhaps that’s why Verse 5 draws this conclusion:
Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.
And what does God choose to do with His limitless power and understanding? He cares for His brokenhearted children.
Are you brokenhearted about anything? Take that sorrow to God – He wants to heal your wounds. And He can! –Dave
