There is a line in a popular worship song that says, “Found in Your hands, fullness of joy. Every fear, suddenly wiped away…” I love the song, but I’m a hypocrite when I sing that last line. For fear has not been wiped away – suddenly or otherwise. In fact, fear is a daily reality for me. And I’m not alone.
Music producer Jimmy Lovine once stated, “Life is a balance of fear and overcoming it.” That’s certainly been true for me. Fear rears its ugly head often, so it needs to be dealt with. One of the ways I’ve attempted to overcome fear is asking myself, “What would you do if fear was not a factor?” If I wasn’t afraid, what would be the right thing to do? The best thing? The preferred thing?
Another important step is taking that fear to God and His Word, which includes an estimated 365 reminders to not fear – one for each day of the year! Perhaps you already have your favorite verse(s) dealing with fear. If not, let me suggest this one:
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6)
Perhaps the thing that makes this one so helpful is the promise that immediately precedes it:
…God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” (vv 5-6)
Fearful situations will undoubtedly come. But when they do, they will be met not only by you, but by your Lord who has said He would never leave you. Not only has God promised to be at your side, He’s there to help – therefore, you need not be afraid.
Facing a frightening situation? Remember, you’re not facing it alone. –Dave
