On Her Way (Or His)?

genesis 24_58_59_her way or his

“I will go” – three simple words that must have been much harder to say than they are to read!

They were uttered by a rather unsung heroine of the faith, Rebekah.  Some of you may know the story by heart, but for the rest of us, here’s a quick summary of the context.  The patriarch of God’s chosen people, Abraham, was nearing death.  Among his dying wishes was for his son Isaac to marry a woman from among his family back in Haran (hundreds of miles away).

Being unable to make the journey himself, Abraham commissioned one of his servants to go find a wife suitable for Isaac.  Shortly thereafter, this unnamed servant arrived in Haran, met Rebekah, and inquired about her family.  Upon learning she’s among Abraham’s kin, he asked to meet her family in order to request Rebekah become Abraham’s daughter-in-law.

The family was open to the idea, but they gave Rebekah the final word.  Scripture records the interaction this way:

So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”  “I will go,” she said. So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way… (Genesis 24:58-59)

On her way with a man she had just met hours earlier.  On her way to a land 400+ miles away that she had never seen.  On her way to marry a man she’d never met.  On her way to a new life, never to see her own kin again.

Why would she do it?  We’re never given direct insight into her mind.  However, the only reason that makes sense to me is that she sensed God wanted her to go.  Rebekah had faith that as she went on her way that she was really going on HIS way.  She trusted an unknown future to a known and trustworthy God.

Is God asking you to go in an unknown direction?  Consider Rebekah’s example as you contemplate your answer.  Will you go your way, or His? –Dave
